Three Days
on the Town: Day One

We've outlined three days in Vancouver that will
ensure you see great sights, view outstanding attractions and experience an
excellent sampling of all our great city has to offer. Try out one, two or all
three days' suggestions for yourself.
Here is day one (the other two days will
appear in our January & February edition in our travel section):
Start
your day at
Granville Island. Park your car at the Aquatic Centre (at Thurlow and Beach)
and hop on a
False Creek Ferry that departs every few minutes. The Public Market opens at
9am and it's a good place to turn breakfast into a progressive meal; a
cappuccino or a hot chocolate at JJ Bean, the Coffee Roaster, breakfast pie from
A la Mode, a donut from Lee's, candied salmon or salmon jerky from Seafood City.
Prowl the craft stalls, studios, and galleries
before heading back on the ferry. Follow the scenic seawall (it's 10.5
kilometres, 6.5 miles) as it leads you around English Bay to the 400-hectare
(1,000-acre)
Stanley Park.
Listen to the language of whales, walruses and
seals in the Arctic Canada
exhibition
at the
Vancouver Aquarium. Fascinating displays illustrate just how fragile this
hostile northern environment is. By then, it's high time for afternoon tea and
scones slathered with double Devon on the patio at the Fish House at Stanley
Park.
Finish your afternoon with a stroll along
Second Beach.
The
Davie Village is your next destination - the gay mecca of Vancouver. The
Davie Village Business Improvement Association sums it up best by describing
the Village as "an eclectic, multi-cultural mix... [with]
Brilliant rainbow banners ... adorn the street posts throughout ... adding a
flash of colour to this dynamic area, which offers something for everyone."
If you've really worked up an appetite, try
Cafe Luxy for some great pasta, line-up with the locals for some Greek food
at
Stepho's or perhaps try some sushi at
Samurai Japanese Restaurant.
After dinner in the Village you are now just
steps away from most of the city's gay nightlife. Choose from dancing at
Celebrities,
Numbers or the
Odyssey, a quiet drink at
The Fountainhead Pub or
The Oasis Pub or perhaps something a
little edgier with the leather crowd at the
PumpJack Pub.
