Where traditionally theatre in Vancouver takes a hiatus for the summer, there are a few brave companies that are not shy in competing with the sun. Along with Fighting Chance and their production of Rent, Not Another Musical Co-op returns with another summer offering, Songs For a New World, August 12th to the 29th at the Pacific Theatre.
This year, the company presents Songs For a New World, a theatrical song cycle written by Tony Award winning composer Jason Robert Brown (Parade, Urban Cowboy). Promising us "witty lyrics, intoxicating harmonies and poignant melodies", much like last year's The World Goes 'Round, Songs For a New World is not your typical musical theatre. Director Shane Snow returns this year but shares the director's chair with Sara-Jane Hosie who recently choreographed the hugely successful production of Altar Boyz for the Arts Club Theatre Company (currently playing at the Arts Club Granville Island). Included in the small four-person cast are Daren Herbert, making his NAMC debut, whose acting credits include a role in the 2006 hit movie Dreamgirls and more recently in A Chorus Line for the Royal City Musical Theatre. Returning from last year's The World Goes 'Round are some other busy local actors including Alison MacDonald, Jennifer Neumann and Jonathan Winsby who join the cast straight off the barricades of the Arts Club's Les Miserables.
