While Vancouver’s Queer Film Festival moves into young adulthood, just south of the border the Seattle Lesbian & Gay Film Festival is turning a sweet sixteen.
Billed as the largest event of its kind in the Pacific Northwest the Seattle Lesbian & Gay Film Festival (SLGFF) features everything from major motion picture premieres to emerging talent. Of course, all film and no play can make Jack and Jill a dull boy or girl. With a variety of parties, plus the four galas, the SLGFF is also the perfect opportunity to get out and explore Seattle outside the cinemas. Between screenings, you’ll definitely want to visit Seattle’s Capital Hill district, the Emerald City’s gay district. Broadway Avenue boasts a collection of boutiques and other retailers and the surrounding area the majority of Seattle’sgay nightlife. For those wanting to get a true Seattle experience, no trip would be complete without a visit to the world-famous Pike Place Market or a trip through the Experience Music Project. Among the dozens of films on screens around the city are the Festival's four gala films: Opening Night Gala: Dirty Girl When the local bad girl gets paired with a frumpy gay boy, sparks fly, wheels spin, and the good times roll in this wild and rockin' road trip comedy. Strike a pose for this high-energy, modern mix of PARIS IS BURNING and Rent, set in the underground drag ball scene of L.A. and featuring fierce dance sequences that will leave you floored. Winner of the Outstanding Documentary Feature Award at Frameline 35: The 2011 San Francisco International LGBT Film Festival, WISH ME AWAY chronicles the arduous and very public coming out story of acclaimed country music star, Chely Wright. An emotional and inspiring tribute to the legendary Vito Russo, groundbreaking author of The Celluloid Closet, founding father of the gay liberation movement, and outspoken AIDS activist in the 1980s.
