Sia to perform at Commodore in April

If openly bisexual singing sensation Sia (pronounced "See-ah") isn't familiar to millions, her voice undoubtedly is having added her vocal talents to two tracks on Zero 7's Simple Things album, collaborated with Beck, sang backup for Jamiroquai and had her track Breathe Me used in the elaborate final scene of the Six Feet Under series. Vancouver audiences will get to see what all the fuss is about on Saturday, April 10th when she performs at the Commodore Ballroom.

Vancouver’s Scatterheart is taking its next big step. After successful headline shows last year at Richards on Richards and Venue, the group takes on the larger and more prestigious Commodore Ballroom on March 27th. We caught up with lead singer Jesse Enright as he finished teaching a yoga class (you certainly can’t get much more West Coast than that) to talk about the band, its influences, feathers and their desire to maintain the mystery behind their sexuality.

The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra is set to perform Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 8 as its showcase event of the 2010 Cultural Olympiad featuring over 400 performers including eight vocal soloists, the Vancouver Bach Choir, Toronto Mendelssohn Choir and the Vancouver Children's Choir.

 

VSO to present Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9

Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 was his final complete symphony, and arguably the greatest piece of music ever written. The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra presents this epic piece along with Beethoven’s Ah, Perfido! and Fidelio: Overture on January 2nd and 4th at 8pm at the Orpheum Theatre. Maestro Bramwell Tovey conducts a concert that features soprano Joni Henson, mezzo-soprano Norine Burgess, tenor Michael Colvin, baritone Greg Dahl and the Vancouver Bach Choir.

 

VSO to present another holiday staple

As one of the holiday season's timeless classics, Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons will get a new interpretation this year as violinist Elizabeth Wallfisch will lead the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra (VSO) in the piece, as well as chamber works by Purcell and Handel. The concerts take place on December 18th and 19th at the Chan Centre for Performing Arts and Massey Theatre in New Westminster on December 21st.

The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra returns with one of its perennial favourites, A Traditional Christmas, starting December 10th.  As with previous years, the concert will feature carols, sing-a-longs, and selections from Handel’s Messiah, Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker, and other holiday favourites.
