Gay Vancouver General

Where is the "gay" area of Vancouver?

The West End or more specifically, the Davie Village area, on the downtown peninsula would be considered the "Castro" of Vancouver. This is usually thought to include the Davie Street area between Burrard Street and Bute Street.  There are a predominance of gay and gay-friendly restaurants, bars and shops in this general area.

Where is the "lesbian" area of Vancouver?

See #1 above.  There is also a growing lesbian population in and around the Commercial Drive area.

Is Vancouver considered safe?

Vancouver is a very tolerant city and embraces it's diversity including its vibrant LGBT community.  Being openly gay in the West End or Davie Village areas (holding hands, showing affection, etc) usually does not attract much attention but as with most large cities there are the exceptions to this rule and we recommend being aware of your surroundings and the people around you at all times.  Hate crimes are few and far between here but not uncommon especially during bar closing times and during the summer months when more people are out-and-about.  Personally we would not find ourselves in the Downtown Eastside area at night.

Who runs GayVancouver.Net (Gay Vancouver Online)?

The owner/operator of the site is Mark Robins, a long-time Vancouver resident.  Mark operates the site on a part-time basis out of his desire to give back to his community and to help promote what he considers to be one of the best places in the world.  He lives happily in the Yaletown area of Vancouver with his partner David.

Is there any accommodation specifically targeted at the gay visitor?

Not specifically.  All of our accommodation listings are gay-friendly establishments.  Vancouver does not currently have a "gay" hotel.

I want to find accommodation near the "gay area" of Vancouver, can you help?

Most of our accommodation listings would be suitable although you would probably want to look for accommodation specifically in the downtown area which would be within walking distance of the Davie Village.

Marriage

I am not a Canadian, can I still get married in Vancouver?

Yes, you can!  You do not need to be a resident to get married.  To have your marriage recognized in your own country, however, is a different matter.  You can find more information on getting married in Vancouver on our same-sex marriage page!

Will Marriage Commissioners provide a place to conduct my marriage?
