A starry night, an audball, some long-list queer films, a challenging new play and a bunch of queens all make for another diverse week in Vancouver. MONDAY, 7 November: Starry NightVancouver's Shooting Stars Foundation presents its annual Starry Night fundraiser to help continue to raise grant money that supports community based organizations providing supplemental health care, food and shelter to persons living with HIV/AIDS. This year's show is hosted by the "fabulously funny" Veena Sood and includes performances of from the likes of Jim Byrnes, Beverley Elliot, Jane Mortifee, Sibel Thrasher and many, many more. Resident DJs G-Luve & DeLux and a bevy of special guests spin an eclectic mix of music over a multimedia platform that includes everything from vinyl to CDs to MP3s at this weekly event in the Tiki Bar of the The Waldorf Hotel. WEDNESDAY, 9 November: Outfest Legacy ProjectPacific Cinémathèque presents The Outfest Legacy Project: Three Films, a program of rare and restored landmark films that document the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people. The films presented include the 1967 Queens at Heart, offering a portrait of Americans on the fringes of gender identity in the period just before Stonewall; the 1950 amateur film Mona's Candle Light which documents patrons and performers at a lesbian bar in San Francisco circa 1950; and Choosing Children from 1984 which presents, with grace and authority, portraits of several lesbian mothers who were among the first to make the historic choice to become parents. THURSDAY, 10 November: Hershe BarOne for the ladies, this edition of Hershe Bar kicks it up a notch withhot new international import, DJ May Crown (Mexico City) plus DJ Rocket (UK) and DJ Kasey Riot (LA, YVR). FRIDAY, 11 November: Falling In TimeScreaming Weenie Productions teams up with the Vancouver Playhouse Theatre Company in this presentation of C.E. Gatchalian's latest play Falling In Time. Inspired by a conversation Gatchalian had with a Korean student during his stint as an ESL teacher in 2004, Falling In Time’s main story line deals with that country’s mandatory military service and the sexual abuse endured by that student. SATURDAY, 12 November: Queens Care IVThis annual fundraiser helps continue the work of The Vancouver Friends For Life Society and to Out in Schools in memory of Diana Rose and DJ Jules. This year's show will be hosted by Joan-E and Carlotta Gurl with music from DJ Drew and performances by a who's who of Vancouver's drag community.
