A fundraiser and womyn's party bookend another diverse week of dance, theatre and film on the Wet Coast. Here are our gay choices for October 3 - 9, 2011. Of course, you'll want to check our Events Calendar for details of all the latest happenings around the city. You can also get our daily events feed directly on your iGoogle homepage! Got an event? Send us the details and we'll get it added to our calendar (and maybe see it listed here in the coming weeks). MONDAY, 3 October: STACK THE RACKBefore anyone's mind goes in the wrong direction here, that is "rack" as in a place to store your wine. Geesh, some people. Anyway, for those that might want to stock up on some great wines, eat some great food from Top Chef Canada winner Dale Mackay AND support a great cause, ensemble restaurant is the place to be tonight. There may be a couple of last minute tickets that you can snag for this unique event in support of QMUNITY. And if the food and wine aren't enough to get you out, I swear to god Chef Mackay has a set of eyes that will have you eating out of his hand in no time. Visit http://www.qmunity.ca for tickets and information. TUESDAY, 4 October: Heart As ArenaWe admit it, we're not the biggest dance fans in the world here but this one had us intrigued - a dance about the heart. They tell us that in addition to exploring the intensity of love, transmission, reception, and communication, this full-length dance also aims to peel off the tired cultural clichés that surround and suffocate the heart. Visit http://www.thecultch.com for tickets and information. WEDNESDAY, 5 October Nikki Yanofsky With the VSORemember that young girl that wowed us all when she sang "I Believe" during that big winter party we threw last year in Vancouver? She's making a return to the Wet Coast to sing with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. Performing jazz and pop classics with the rich sound of the VSO, you can believe this will be a great concert. Besides, anyone that gets their inspiration from the legendary Ella Fitzgerald is okay in our books. Visit http://www.vancouversymphony.ca for tickets and information. THURSDAY, 6 October: Friends of Dorothy Film SeriesEast Vancouver drag diva Isolde N. Barron hosts the first of this monthly series with both The Wizard of Oz and The Adventure of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. Tickets for the double feature are only $10 each but you can save yourself a couple of dollars by dressing as one of the characters from either movie. Or how about a hybrid? I can just see it now: the Tin Man in drag. Visit the group's Facebook event page for more information. FRIDAY, 7 October: Ride The CylconeFor those of you that visit us on a regular basis know that we're really big on the local arts scene with a particular emphasis on theatre. In 2010 we have already seen some 80+ shows but there has nothing quite been like Ride the Cyclone. Wildly inventive and tremendously entertaining this is one of only three shows that have received our 5 star rating this year. While our own crystal ball is a little tarnished, we did consult with Karnack and he's pretty sure this will top our best of Vancouver theatre list this year. Visit http://www.ridethecyclonemusical.com for tickets and information. SATURDAY, 8 October: A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The ForumStephen Sondheim. That pretty much guarantees an audience. But add another name - Ryan Mooney, as in the Fighting Chance Productions Artistic Director - and we're there like a toga at a frat party. This time though the draw is that Mooney will be on stage instead of in the director's chair. Time to find out if he can walk the talk! Let's hope Cathy Wilmot has been able to reign him in! Visit http://www.fightingchanceproductions.ca for tickets and information. SUNDAY, 9 October: Herse Bar - Where The Girls AreHere's one for the womyn. Two rooms with three DJs will keep things hopping all night long. With Monday a holiday (for our American friends this is the real Thanksgiving) you have no excuses.
