Saturday, 02 July 2011

Some theatre, an annual fundraiser and a whole lot of bridges make up our picks for this week.  Here are our gay choices for 4 - 10 July 2011.  And just in case we forget (we seem to do that a lot lately), a send out special greetings to all our American friends celebrating their own special day on July 4th.

Of course, you'll want to check our Events Calendar for details of all the latest happenings around the city. You can also get our daily events feed directly on your iGoogle homepage!

Got an event? Send us the details and we'll get it added to our calendar (and maybe see it listed here in the coming weeks).

monday, 4 july: top and bottoms

We went searching for something with an American Independence theme but since this is Canada, we couldn't find anything.  So we thought the next best thing for a Monday night would the boys and girls of The Bobbers who are always at the ready to entertain.  Hopefully they'll throw in a few American references. Always free and (almost) always funny, think of it as theatresports with an LGBTQ sensibility.  The hilarity gets underway at 8pm in the J Lounge at 1216 Bute Street.  Visit the group's Facebook page for more information.

Tuesday, 5 July: bash: latter-day plays

Bash - Latter-Day PlaysThe gang at Hardline Productions are at it again with another punch-to-the-gut with Neil Labute’s three stories of everyday evil. But what makes this production of Bash so compelling, besides some great acting, is director Mack Gordon's re-write. If you haven't seen a production from this small indie theatre company yet, now is your chance. Visit http://hardlineproductions.ca for more information.

Wednesday, 6 july: nunsense

Normally we wouldn't suggest taking in a show in White Rock, let alone a show about nuns.  I mean we're not even sure our passports are up-to-date and are still in therapy from having attended private Catholic school.  But when we found out the incomparable Cathy Wilmot was part of this production, we decided we'd cross as many bridges as it took.  So get out your GPS and make your way to White Rock for this silly romp with the Little Sisters of Hoboken.  Visit http://fightingchanceproductions.ca for more information.

thursday, 7 july: project empty bowl!

Project Empty BowlA Loving Spoonful hosts its signature fundraiser, Project Empty Bowl raising needed funds to continue providing free meals and nutritional counselling for those living with HIV/AIDS in Vancouver.  Featuring gourmet food plus wine and beer pairings this gala is not to be missed.  This  year the art auction even includes art from Arthur Erickson’s personal art collection.  Visit http://www.alovingspoonful.org for more information.

friday, 8 july: Surrey Pride Cabaret & Dinner

Vancouver may be host to the biggest Pride celebrations in the region but we're certainly not the only ones that can throw a great party!  The evening features live drag performer Bobby Drake who has just returned from being featured in Sydney, Australia's Gay Pride and Mardi Gras. The $40 tickets include a full buffet dinner and the show.  Visit http://www.surreypride.ca for more information.

saturday, 9 july: Surrey Pride: Dance Party

Surrey Pride 2011If you're planning to be out in Surrey (get it, "out" in Surrey) for the cabaret show on Friday night or the Festival on Sunday, why not make a weekend of it?  The Surrey Pride festivities continue tonight with a dance party featuring featuring Vancouver's DJ Drew and even a couple of Priape go-go boys. Visit http://www.surreypride.ca for more information.

sunday, 10 july: surrey pride festival 2011

The Surrey Pride season culminates once again at Holland Park (13428 Old Yale Road) with the Surrey Pride Festival in the Park on Sunday, July 10th from Noon to 6pm. This year's Festival, with the theme Share the Rainbow, features live entertainment, food, fun, and a KIDZONE with a bouncy castle, crafts, and face painting.  Visit http://www.surreypride.ca for more information.
