Monday, 24 October 2011

The week starts off innocently enough with some musical theatre, something to satisfy your sweet tooth and some humpday libations.  But watch out!  Things gradually get spookier as Halloween approaches. Here are gay choices for the week of October 24 - 31, 2011.

Of course, you'll want to check our Events Calendar for details of all the latest happenings around the city. You can also get our daily events feed directly on your iGoogle homepage!  Got an event? Send us the details and we'll get it added to our calendar (and maybe see it listed here in the coming weeks).

MONDAY, 24 October: West Side Story

This one intrigued us somewhat: Vancouver Opera taking on one of the most iconic pieces of musical theatre of the last century.  For us it just didn't seem to gel with Die Fledermaus, Rossini or Der Ring des Nibelungen.  But since it is one of our favourite musicals we're willing to take the chance.  Let's hope they leave the Vikings for their next show though.  Go, meet a girl like Maria (but remember, her last name ain't Callas).  Visit http://www.vancouveropera.ca for more information.

TUESDAY, 25 October: Festival Of Chocolate

Festival of Chocolate

Yes, we admit it.  We have quite the sweet tooth around here and nothing says sweet to us quite like chocolate.  Now through November 10 take in the magical mystery of cacao and chocolate at local chocolate shops, wineries, breweries, restaurants, cafes, and bakeries.  Not just relegated for chocolates though, the Festival continues to also show case all things that pair with chocolate too.  For a full listing and exact times of chocolate events for 2011 visit http://www.festivalofchocolate.ca.

WEDNESDAY, 26 October: Gossip! Talk of the Town

Here's a midweek break to celebrate Hump Day and a wee taste of what's in store for you this weekend!  1181 hosts the return of Gossip! with DJ G-Luve playing classic R&B, 80s and 90s.  Best thing?  There is no cover so all your cash can go towards your favourite libation.

THURSDAY, 27 October: Bash: Latter Day Plays

Bash: Latter Day Plays

This will be the second presentation of Neil LaBute's exploration of everyday evil.  We suppose it is kind of fitting given Halloween is just around the corner.  If you missed the last time Bash appeared on Vancouver stages here is a chance to see what another local group of young actors do with these three dark and menacing one-act plays.  Visit the group's Facebook event page for more information.

FRIDAY, 28 October: Rapture Paranoia

The high holy days of Halloween get underway with the the start of Halloweekend 2011.  What better way to kick it off than with the Flame and the Dame's annual spooktacular at the Commodore Ballroom.  The night features two of Vancouver's best DJ's: Adam Dreaddy and Jef Leppard and a performance by Mantra and if you come dressed in your best costume, you have a chance to win a five day Caribbean Cruise for two!  Tickets are available online.

SATURDAY, 29 October: Secret Souls Walk

Vancouver's Secret of Lost Souls: The Secret Souls Walk

The Secret Souls Walk returns to East Vancouver!  At the heart of Parade of Lost Souls Festival, the walk starts at an undisclosed location which is kept secret until the very day of the event.  The guided walk leads brave souls on a winding route through the alleys, streets, and spaces of East Vancouver where you will encounter dancers, musicians, ghouls, ghosts, installation art, street performers, and more.  The Secret Souls Walk takes place Oct. 29, starting at 5pm. The starting location will be released on the day of the event at http://publicdreams.org.

SUNDAY, 30 October: Naked Hell Halloween: The Devil's Playground

Normally we don't go into this sort of thing.  Not that we're prudes or anything ... we really do like to think oursevelves as open-minded ... but because early on we made a decision that sex was not going to define us.  Today we're making an exception as our little protest against how images of gratuitous violence continue to be an acceptable part of our culture but show a man's penis and we're all somehow going to hell in a handbasket.  So tonight we're stripping down to our birthday suits and shaking that what god gave us.  Visit http://www.p-can.org for more information.
