Not one but two descents into hell, a campy mystery, some youthful recognition, an incredible trumpet player and even a potential virgin sacrifice all make it on our list of gay choices the week of May 23 - 29, 2011. Of course, you'll want to check our Events Calendar for details of all the latest happenings around the city. You can also get our daily events feed directly on your iGoogle homepage! Got an event? Send us the details and we'll get it added to our calendar (and maybe see it listed here in the coming weeks). monday, 23 May: eurydiceFrom the company that made our 2009 best theatre list with its production of Stop Kiss, Secretly Women Productions brings Ann Ruhl's modern adaptation of the myth of Orpheus to Vancouver's Studio 16. Told from the perspective of Eurydice, this adaptation brings a feminist viewpoint to Orpheus' descent into the Underworld. Visit the group's Facebook page for tickets and information. Tuesday, 24 may: the ballad of bobby angel
Wednesday, 25 may: the great divorceIs there a theme afoot this week? Do two make a theme? On Monday Orpheus makes his trip to the Underworld to rescue Eurydice and now Pacific Theatre presents The Great Divorce featuring one man's bus ride from hell to heaven to examine the relationship between history’s two most dramatic of opposites. Adapted for the stage from CS Lewis' novel is this the highway to hell foretold by AC/DC? Visit http://www.pacifictheatre.org for tickets and information. thursday, 26 may: loud scholarship gala
friday, 27 may: Byron Stripling - a night at the cotton clubWe had the good fortune to see Byron Stripling a couple of years ago when he played with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. It is a concert we still talk about. Here is your chance to see what we think all the fuss is about as this world-class trumpet player returns to the Orpheum for an evening of jazz and blues with the VSO. Remember ... it don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing! Visit http://www.vancouversymphony.ca for tickets and information. saturday, 28 May: never swim aloneAnother indie theatre company that is headed places, making our best theatre list last year with their production of Twelve Angry Men. Described as a quick-witted, breakneck satire it is actually the "stabbing each other" and "pissing contests" that the company promises that made us sit up and notice. Not surprising though since it all comes from Hardline Productions whose slogan is "theatre that punches you in the face". Not literally, of course. That would just be a lawsuit waiting to happen. They want to figuratively punch us in the face. Visit http://www.hardlineproductions.ca for more information. sunday, 29 may: cruisey-t kick-off cruiseOkay, really ... summer needs to start soon! Given how cold it has been recently we're seriously doubting this whole global warming thing. We're hoping that with the first Cruisey-T cruise of the season is enough to appease the gods and will mark the start of the warmer weather in Vancouver. If not, we're even considering a virgin sacrifice. Any volunteers? In the meantime, visit http://www.cruiseyt.com for more information on the cruise. |
