Monday, 21 May 2012

The arts are well represented as usual this week but we're also throwing in a little taste of Europe and a summer tradition as we present our gay choices for the week of 21 - 27 May 2012.

Of course, you'll want to check our Events Calendar for details of all the latest happenings around the city. You can also get our daily events feed directly on your iGoogle homepage! Got an event? Send us the details and we'll get it added to our calendar (and maybe see it listed here in the coming weeks).

MONDAY, 21 May: Bard on Screen

You don't necessarily know summer is approaching by the amount of sun in Vancouver but by its summertime festivals.  One of the most enduring is Vancouver's Bard on the Beach.  But before the tents start to fill with the sounds of Shakespeare, they are whetting our appetite with a screening of Shakespeare High, a documentary as unique as this Vancouver tradition.  Visit http://vifc.org for tickets and information.

TUESDAY, 22 May: Farragut North

Farragut NorthThis was one of our picks last week as it had us intrigued.  But after our reviewer saw it and declared it had some terrific performances, we knew it would make our list again this week.  The play on which the Academy Award nominated movie The Ides of March was based. Visit the group's Facebook event page for more information.

WEDNESDAY, 23 May: The Fine Line - Twisted Angels

Dancers Dancing presents its latest work for three dancers inspired by the brief moments in our lives when perception is altered and intense clarity and revelation can take place - the moment of the epiphany. Some pretty heady stuff but sometimes we think dancing should be more than shirtless men and glowsticks.  Visit http://www.dancersdancing.com for more information.

THURSDAY, 24 May: Book Launch - Food Sluts at Doll & Penny's

Foodsluts at Doll & Penny’s CafeWhen Tony Correia moved to Vancouver in 1988 with the return portion of plane ticket purchased from a classified ad, he didn’t think he would last six months in the city. Twenty years and a popular newspaper serial later, comes Foodsluts at Doll & Penny’s Café, his memoir about the notorious drag cabaret located in the heart of Vancouver’s West End. Meet author Tony Correia and illustrator Ken Boesem as they sign copies of the book at Little Sisters (1238 Davie Street, Vancouver) at 7pm.
