Sunday, 19 June 2011

The highlight may be the official start to Vancouver's Pride celebrations with East Side Pride, but there is certainly no lack of other things to do this week.  Here is our list of gay choices for the week of June 20 - 26, 2011.

Of course, you'll want to check our Events Calendar for details of all the latest happenings around the city. You can also get our daily events feed directly on your iGoogle homepage!

Got an event? Send us the details and we'll get it added to our calendar (and maybe see it listed here in the coming weeks).

monday, 20 June: The jessies

Those of you that visit us on a regular basis know we take our theatre very seriously.  The pinnacle of the professional Vancouver theatre scene each year is The Jessie Richardson Theatre Awards, or simply, The Jessies.  Tonight the local theatre industry honours its own and while it might not have quite the pizzazz of the Tonys or the glam of the Oscars but we still want to see who wins.  If we were picking the Jessies: the outstanding productions in the large and small theatre categories respectively would be August: Osage County (Arts Club) and Jesus Hopped the 'A' Train (one2theatre).  Visit http://www.jessies.ca for more information.

Tuesday, 21 June: the merchant of venice

The Merchant of VeniceThe Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival is in full swing.  Playing alternate nights to As You Like It under the main stage tent is The Merchant of Venice.  I dare say some of us will remember the cast of characters from our studies in high school (or perhaps I just dated myself?).  Will Shylock get his 'pound of flesh' from Antonio?  Will Portia and Bassanio ultimately fall in love?  Sounds sort of like daytime television.  Visit http://www.bardonthebeach.org for more information.

Wednesday, 22 JUne: wednesgay

First there was Saturgay and now Vancouver's gay-friendly Five Sixty brings us Wednesgay.  Also known as Hump Wednesdays the midweek evening of dancing gets underway at 10pm with DJ Alibaba and a video dance party.  With two of seven nights now gay at Five Sixty will Sungay, Mongay, Tuesgay, Thursgay or Frigay be far behind?  We hope so - Vancouver could do with another gay bar.  Visit http://fivesixty.ca for more information.

thursday, 23 June: bell's roar - Dyke march fundraiser

Bell's RoardVancouver's Dyke March gets some much needed fundraising help from New York's Sean Desiree who is behind Bell's Roar.  Described as music that "pays tribute to raw blues standards and builds with layered guitar effects, lusty beats, and crisp vocal stylings" Bell's Roar gets its name from feminist writer, bell hooks. In addition to Bell's Roar, other local queer/feminist performers are expected to perform.  Visit http://www.rhizomecafe.ca for more information.

friday, 24 June: conceiving family

The Adoptive Family Association of BC hosts the Vancouver premiere of Amy Bohigian's new documentary Conceiving Family at The Cultch.  Following the adoption process of five gay and lesbian couples in British Columbia the film explores "the bravery, determination, and humor it takes to rise above the legal systems, societal prejudices, and personal fears inherent in starting a family through adoption".  The five couples in the film will be on hand after the film for a Q&A.  Visit http://watershedproductions.ca for more information.

saturday, 25 June: east side pride

East Side Pride

It's hard to believe that it is already that time of the year!  The official Vancouver Pride season gets started with this annual event at McSpadden Park (not Grandview this year) from 11am to 5pm.  Conni Smudge returns as host accompanied this year by East Van's own drag queen Isolde N Barron.  Along with the artisans village, some of Vancouver's top female talent hits the stage including The Bobbers, Black Parade Kings, Norine Braun, Liv Wade, Megan Podwin, Neptune at Night and Backyard Betties.  Visit http://www.vancouverpride.ca for more information.

sunday, 26 June: Love not h8: qmunity fundraiser

Singer-songwriters Bodhi Jones, Nadia von Hahn, Katie Schaan and Thom Kolb join together for "Love Not H8" a fundraiser for Qmunity (BC’s Queer Resource Centre). At the Railway Club beginning at 8pm the $10 cover all goes to support the work of Qmunity. Visit the group's Facebook event page for more information.
