Sunday, 01 May 2011

Monday is a no-brainer what with that election thingy happening, but what about the rest of the week? Here are our gay choices of things to do the week of May 2 - 8, 2011.

Of course, you'll want to check our Events Calendar for details of all the latest happenings around the city. You can also get our daily events feed directly on your iGoogle homepage!

Got an event? Send us the details and we'll get it added to our calendar (and maybe see it listed here in the coming weeks).

monday, 2 May: election night in canada

Whatever your political stripe, one thing for sure is you need to do your duty, so don't forget to vote in the Federal election today. I don't want to hear any whining from anyone that doesn't bother!  Not sure if you're eligible or need to know where to vote?  Visit http://www.elections.ca for everything election related.

Tuesday, 3 may: the pixies

The PixiesThe Grammy nominated The Pixies finish up their cross-country tour on the West Coast with a performance at the Orpheum tonight.  Last we checked tickets were still available for the alt-rock band but were going fast!  They play a second concert on Wednesday night as well.

Wednesday, 4 may: a funny thing happened...

Ever wondered what lawyers get up to when they're not ... ummmm ... lawyering?  The Lawyer Show is an annual fundraiser for Carousel Theatre for Young People and Touchstone Theatre.  Now in its tenth year we can't guarantee how good these lawyers will be on stage compared to in the courtroom, but it's really about raising funds for a couple of great organizations, right?  This year they sing and dance their way through the hilarious A Funny Thing Happened On the Way to the Forum.  Through May 7.  To purchase tickets call Carousel Theatre at 604.685.6217 or visit http://www.carouseltheatre.ca for more information.

thursday, 5 may: Bill's Birthday Breakfast: Bard On The Beach Fundraiser

Bill's Birthday BashAnother Vancouver institution holds its annual Bill's Birthday Breakfast celebrating the 447th birthday of the Bard himself.  Okay, we know Shakespeare is dead and isn't really 447 years old, but wasn't it Shakespeare who once wrote "all the world's a party and all the men and women merely party-goers"?  Well, he said something like that.  Guess you'll just have to go and ask Christopher Gaze.  Visit http://www.bardonthebeach.org for tickets and information.

friday, 6 may: give your mom a laugh

We know Fridays are usually about you - after a long week blowing off some steam at the Fountainhead or the Pumpjack after work.  But this week why not make Friday about someone else.  Like your mother.  You know, the woman that spent 23 hours in labour just to bring you into this world.  The funny people at Vancouver TheatreSports have two shows tonight to start off the Mother's Day weekend (you did send flowers, right?) hosted by the mother of that odd bunch that live at 0001 Cemetary Lane, Morticia Addams.  Okay, in reality it is actor Ellie Harvie but she did play Morticia on television and if you ask real nice maybe she'll even lead you all in a sing-a-long of the show's theme song.  Altogether now: "they're creepy and their kooky, mysterious and spooky, they're altogether ooky, they're the Addams Family". Visit http://www.vtsl.com for tickets and information.

saturday, 7 May: prodigals

Prodigals

One of our top ten theatre picks for 2010 gets a re-mount.  Actually, we discovered that what we saw last year was a "workshop" version of the play.  Now they're calling it a "world premiere".  I think we'll soon run out of things to put in "air quotes" if they decide on another run next year. But seriously, this is some seriously good theatre as evidenced by our review of this new production.  If you missed it last time this is your opportunity.  We'll let you know if it makes it into our list for 2011.  Tickets are available online.

sunday, 8 may: doxa documentary film festival

The DOXA Documentary Film Festival continues its tradition of bringing some of the most interesting documentary films to Vancouver screens.  Included this year are four films with an LGBTQ theme.  Since three of the four LGBTQ films are screening today it was pretty much a given the Festival would be our gay choice for today.  Visit http://www.doxafestival.ca for more information.
