Words (spoken and written) bookend another diverse week that includes theatre, dance and music.  Here are our gay choices for September 19 - 25, 2011.

Of course, you'll want to check our Events Calendar for details of all the latest happenings around the city. You can also get our daily events feed directly on your iGoogle homepage!

Got an event? Send us the details and we'll get it added to our calendar (and maybe see it listed here in the coming weeks).

MONDAY, 19 SEPTEMBER: vancouver Poetry Slam

The Vancouver Poetry Slam has been around since 1996, making it the longest-running poetry slam in Canada.  Being the third Monday of the month means it is open slam night.  Not familiar with a poetry slam?  The rules are simple: the poet must perform a poem of their own creation, in any style, within the time limit without the aid of props or music.  Five judges, chosen randomly from the audience, are the judges.  Visit http://vancouverpoetryhouse.com for more information.

TUESDAY, 20 SEPTEMBER: Next To Normal

Next To Normal

There is certainly nothing normal about the Arts Club’s season opener.  But then there is nothing normal about Next To Normal, the rock beat anti-musical which explores a ghostly world of depression and a family’s struggle with love and loss.  With an ensemble cast worthy of any Broadway stage, this Arts Club production is a powerful opener to its new season.  Visit http://www.artsclub.com for tickets and information.

WEDNESDAY, 21 SEPTEMBER: VMC Open Rehearsals

Do you like to sing? The Vancouver Men's Chorus (VMC) is recruiting! For over 25 years now the VMC has been entertaining audiences around town and around the world.  As Canada's first gay chorus, over the years the chorus has performed with such luminaries as Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and collaborated with choruses from as far away as Melo’ Men in Paris, France.  Visit http://www.vancouvermenschorus.org for more information.

THURSDAY, 22 SEPTEMBER: true love lies

True Love Lies

Guess who's coming to dinner?  The bad boy of Canadian theatre is back, this time with an audacious and outrageous new comedy of bad manners.  True Love Lies meets up with two of Fraser's characters from Unidentified Human Remains and the True Nature of Love – Kane and David – twenty years later. Kane is now straight, married and living in suburbia with two kids. David’s reappearance outs dad to his kids and forces the question, does true love ever die?  Visit http://www.thecultch.com for tickets and information.

FRIDAY, 23 SEPTEMBER: The National Ballet of Canada

Ballet BC presents the 60th anniversary tour of The National Ballet of Canada with four dances from the likes of dance luminaries William Forsythe and Jerome Robbins. With only three performances this is a must-see for all ballet aficiandos.  They aren't called The National Ballet of Canada for nothing!  Visit http://www.balletbc.com for tickets and information.

SATURDAY, 24 SEPTEMBER: kate reid

Kate ReidVancouver-based singer, songwriter and storyteller Kate Reid launches her newest CD "Doing It For The Chicks".  With a portion of the proceeds from Kate's CD being donated to Help Lesotho & Vancouver's Queer Film Festival you'll want to pick up a couple as gifts. Visit http://www.roguefolk.bc.ca for tickets and information.

SUNDAY, 25 SEPTEMBER: Word On The Street

Word On The Street Vancouver may be expanding into a three-day event (the 17th annual festival takes place from Friday, September 23 to Sunday, September 25) but it is the street festival, celebrating the written word, around Library Square in downtown Vancouver today that remains the highlight. Visit http://www.thewordonthestreet.ca for more information.
