Monday, 17 October 2011

Theatre, dance and a new radio show starts a week that ends with three wild weekend parties and ironically, a film fest about recovery.  Here are our gay choices for October 17 - 23, 2011.

Of course, you'll want to check our Events Calendar for details of all the latest happenings around the city. You can also get our daily events feed directly on your iGoogle homepage!

Got an event? Send us the details and we'll get it added to our calendar (and maybe see it listed here in the coming weeks).

MONDAY, 17 October: Tosca Cafe

There are many wonderful moments within the two worlds that co-exist in the Vancouver Playhouse / Theatre Calgary presentation of Tosca Café but these come mostly from the world of the dancers who take us on a almost century’s long journey through the history of this San Francisco landmark. Visit http://www.vancouverplayhouse.com for tickets and information.

TUESDAY, 18 October: Queer FM Arts Xtra

Queer FM Arts Xtra

Vancouver's queer community continues to take over the airwaves.  Complimenting the traditional Thursday evening broadcast of QueerFM is this newest addition to your radio - the QueerFM Arts Xtra features live guests, an internet roundup, local DJ mixes and music from around the world.  Go old-school.  Tim to turn off morning television and turn on the radio.  Tuesday mornings from 9:30am - 10:30am on CiTR 101.9 FM.

WEDNESDAY, 19 October: Doctor Hell's House of Bloody Terrors

It may sound a bit scary but when you hear it comes from the minds of the silly people at the Vancouver TheatreSports League, you just know it will be a bloody good (and funny) time.  With only three performances of this Halloween special before the big day, this is a great time to get into the Halloween, er, spirit.  Hosted by Doctor Hell himself, guests will not only experience the drama and suspense of a classic horror show but some devilishly funny TheatreSports improv games as well.  Visit http://www.vtsl.com for tickets and information.

THURSDAY, 20 October: Vancouver's Wild Weekend

Vancouver's Wild Weekend

Lions and tigers and BEARS!  Oh my!  Vancouver's Wild Weekend kicks off tonight part of the dozen or so events that will take place from now through Sunday.  From bearotic dancers at the Oasis to Cub-a-licious at Celebrities there is something for every bear, otter, wolf and their friends, all the while raising funds for Camp Moomba, which raises money to help children impacted by HIV/AIDS.  Visit www.vancouverswild.com or Vancouver's WILD Weekend on Facebook.

FRIDAY, 21 October: Bearracuda

With a name like Bearracuda it isn't difficult to figure out this is part of the Wild Weekend.  Returning to Club Five Sixty once again, this edition of Bearracuda features DJs Paul Goodyear, Pee Play and Taffi Louis.  Tickets are only $10 available at Priape or online.

SATURDAY, 22 October: TruckerDisco

TruckerDisco

Our motto around GayVancouver.Net has become "we'll sleep when we're dead".  With the third dance party in a row in our gay choices this week, TruckerDisco is not only the one that will make Sunday a day of rest, it is also the one that has us most intrigued.  BigTop, Hippy Ricky and Taffi Louis will provide some of those rare and forgotten disco gems to a new generation, pushing what was possibly the "gayest" music of all time beyond the ghetto. Visit the group's Facebook page for more information.

SUNDAY, 23 October: Reel Recovery Film Fest

If you look back at our picks over the last three days, the irony is pretty obvious as we end the week with the Reel Recovery Film Festival.  Showcasing films about addiction and recovery this final day of the three-day long fest features the screening of The Honour of All, the story of how a few people took control of their lives and generated a new atmosphere of dignity and hope. Re-creating the events that took place in the small northern B.C. Indian community of Alkali Lake between 1940 and 1945, where the level of alcoholism was almost 100%, a few brave individuals transform the community back into a life of sobriety.  Visit http://www.orchardrecovery.com/filmfest/ for more information.
