Sunday, 17 July 2011

A country diva, a pop diva and a mad drag queen highlight a week that also sees the opening of Celebrate Queer Vancouver and the annual Pride Picnic in the Park.  Here are our gay choices for the week of July 17 - 23, 2011.

Of course, you'll want to check our Events Calendar for details of all the latest happenings around the city. You can also get our daily events feed directly on your iGoogle homepage!

Got an event? Send us the details and we'll get it added to our calendar (and maybe see it listed here in the coming weeks).

monday, 18 july: a closer walk with patsy cline

Held over for an additional two weeks, this Arts Club presentation might be a little light on story, but there is no denying you'll go crazy for the talent of Sara-Jeanne Hosie in the title role.  Visit http://www.artsclub.com for tickets and information.

Tuesday, 19 July: katy perry

Katy PerryThis pop superstar takes to the stage at Rogers Arena tonight as part of her California Dreams world tour.  As we write it appears to be a sell-out but you can always hope that they release a few more tickets before the show.  I suppose there are also those sweet little guys outside the arena that would be happy to sell you a ticket or two if you get really desperate. Visit http://www.katyperry.com for more information.

Wednesday, 20 july: the ballad of bobby angel

If you're a regular visitor to our site you'll know we're all over theatre and when you describe a show as "campy and comedic" you just know it's for us.  It also features music from Matthew Presidente. One night only at J Lounge tonight at 7pm.  Visit the group's Facebook event page for more information.

thursday, 21 july: celebrate queer vancouver launch

Celebrate Queer VancouverThose folks at Out On Screen are like the energizer bunnies.  Not content just to give us Vancouver's second largest film festival each year, to help celebrate Vancouver's 125th birthday they present a month-long celebration of queer film, visual art and community dialogue.  Included in the celebration are eight lamp-post installations that include a Chosen Family Portrait image, personal quote culled from the featured family’s testimonial, and a queer historical fact about the dynamic city we live in.  It all gets underway at the Launch tonight at Roundhouse.  Visit http://www.queerfilmfestival.ca for more information.

friday, 22 july: confessions of a mad drag queen

David Blue and his Raving Theatre return with another original script that promises "mascara, madness and murder" as it tells the story of Miranda Rights, who twenty years ago snapped and went on a murderous rampage. Blue says this is his homage to Bette Davis, with a little bit of Joan Crawford and Gloria Swanson thrown in for good measure.  We wonder if Miranda is ready for her close-up?  At the PAL Theatre through July 30, 2011.  Visit http://www.ticketstonight.ca for tickets and information.

saturday, 23 july: picnic in the park

Pride Picnic in the ParkWith so much going on this Saturday it was really difficult to pick just one thing for today. Don't believe us?  Just check out the all the events for today.  But since sometimes we've just got to make those tough choices and since we're all about tradition and nostalgia we landed on the Pride Picnic in the Park.  From 11am to 8pm at Brockton Oval in Stanley Park you can participate in some games (including the every popular high heel shoe toss and drag races) or just relax in the beer garden listening to the music.  Visit http://www.vancouverpride.ca for more information.

sunday, 24 july: complete works of william shakespeare

Don't let the title fool you - it's really a comedy.  From director David C Jones and the Bob Loblaw Queer Arts Society (the same people who bring you queer improv every Monday at J Lounge) comes 37 of Shakespeares plays in 97 minutes.  With Hamlet being performed backwards, Othello as a rap and Titus Andronicus turned into a cooking show this is not your stuffy Bard in a tent.  An official Partner in Pride event.  Visit http://www.jerichoartscentre.com for tickets and information.
