Shakespeare, dim sum, big hair and bears are all on tap for another week of eclectic events in Vancouver. Here are our gay choices of things to do the week of May 16 - 22, 2011.

Of course, you'll want to check our Events Calendar for details of all the latest happenings around the city. You can also get our daily events feed directly on your iGoogle homepage!

Got an event? Send us the details and we'll get it added to our calendar (and maybe see it listed here in the coming weeks).

monday, 16 May: Bard on the beach - shakespeare in love

They keep telling us summer is on its way.  Given how terrible the weather has been recently it's been hard to keep the faith.  But one sure sign that summer is coming is the Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival.  And while the Festival doesn't open under the tents in Vanier Park for a few more weeks, they are screening two films to complement this year's season.  First up is the Oscar best picture winner Shakespeare In Love with hottie Joseph Fiennes.  Oh, and Gwyneth what's-her-name.  Visit http://filmguide.viff.org for tickets and information.

Tuesday, 17 may: international day against homophobia

International Day Against Homophobia BreakfastQMUNITY and Vancity host the annual International Day Against Homophobia Breakfast this year at the Floata Restaurant in Chinatown.  This year's theme is all about queer relationships and comes at a time when LGBTQ relationships continue to be marginalized.  As always QMUNITY promises there will be engaging activities, compelling speakers and (new this year) fabulous Dim Sum!  Tickets (if they are still available by the time you read this) are available online at http://qmunityidah.eventbrite.com.

Wednesday, 18 may: beautiful problems

Vancouver's Radix Theatre is renowned for its desire to foster the creation of original and socially relevant theatre.  In its newest show the theatre company presents this new original work inspired by the famous 1997 chess game between world champion Garry Kasparov and the IBM computer Deep Blue.  With IBM's Watson trouncing Jeopardy stars Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter recently the timing couldn't be better.  Artistic Director Andrew Laurenson's personal stories are the most compelling part of this multi-disciplinary show.  Visit http://www.radixtheatre.org for tickets and information.

thursday, 19 may: timberline dance

Timberline DanceDo men in tight jeans and big hats turn you on?  Got a fetish for cowboy boots?  Then perhaps it's time for you to boot scoot and boogie your way down to St Paul's Anglican Church for the Timberline Dance ... whose name we're pretty sure comes from the old Timberline in Seattle.  Don't worry if you don't country dance (or its been so long you've forgotten) the friendly folk will give you a lesson at the start of each night.  A portion of your door donation goes to help A Loving Spoonful. Visit http://www.timberlinedance.org for more information.  Yee haw, pard'ner!

friday, 20 may: hairspray

Okay, so it doesn't quite have that same edge as the original John Waters movie but there really is no stoppin' the beat with this infectiously fun musical.  Can a girl with big ideas (and really big hair!) change the world … and win the heart of dreamy Link Larkin?  You'll just have to go to find out.  Starring Vancouver actor Jay Brazeau as Edna Turnblad, in the role made famous by Divine and Harvey Fierstein, this is sure to be a show that even Amber Von Tussle can't spoil.  Visit http://www.artsclub.com for tickets and information.

saturday, 21 May: spring fever 4

Spring Fever 4

Four of anything is always a good sign - it shows that the three before it were so good that it was worth doing for the fourth time.  Celebrities celebrates spring fever (really though, we think given how cold it has been so far this spring a better title might be Cabin Fever 4).  DJ Paulo hosts with an opening set by DJ Nick Bertossi and performance by Signna Blaze.  Visit http://www.celebritiesnightclub.com for tickets and information.

sunday, 22 may: thickset presents audio teabag & APOCALYPSTICK

The bears and cubs are coming out of hibernation!  This Victoria Day long weekend the men of Thickset present a special free Sunday afternoon event at The Cobalt on Main.  DJ RJ Solo joins Taffi Louis with an assortment of audio oddities including old rare disco, modern electro, indie, synthpop, 80s new wave, and much more!  While the party is aimed at bearish folk and their admirers, organizers tell us these bears don't bite. The fun goes from 4-8pm and is followed by East Vancouver's only drag show Apocalypstick! at 9pm.  Visit http://www.thickset.ca for more information.
