Sunday, 14 August 2011

While another eclectic mix of things to do this week, families are a definite focus this coming week.  Here are our gay choices for the week of August 15 - 21, 2011.

Of course, you'll want to check our Events Calendar for details of all the latest happenings around the city. You can also get our daily events feed directly on your iGoogle homepage!

Got an event? Send us the details and we'll get it added to our calendar (and maybe see it listed here in the coming weeks).

monday, 15 august: chosen family portraits

There are the families that we are born into and the ones that we choose.  During the 2010 Vancouver Queer Film Festival photographer Sarah Race and Sarah Buchanan captured images and stories of chosen LGBTQ families.  One year later some of those images and stories are reflected in an exhibition at the Museum of Vancouver.  Visit http://museumofvancouver.ca for more information.

Tuesday, 16 august: mamma mia!

Mamma Mia!Dancing Queen.  SOS. Money, Money Money.  Chances are there are few that don't recognize these as ABBA songs.  Nearly 30 years after Anni-Frid, Björn, Benny and Agnetha broke-up, the music that defined a decade continues to entertain.  From uber-popular tribute bands to the stage musical that spawned a hit Hollywood musical, the music of ABBA still has them dancing in the aisles.  On stage at the QE Theatre through Sunday, Mamma Mia! is calling out.  Can you hear it Fernando?  It's saying "Take a Chance On Me".  Tickets are available online.

Wednesday, 17 AUGUST: gossip - talk of the town

It's back.  The popular mid-week night at 1181 has returned featuring DJs G-Luve and Lisa Delux this is one night that is  sure to get your tounge wagging.  Best thing, unlike the $1.99 cover price of your favourite gossip rag, this one is free.  Visit the 1181 Facebook page, for more information.  Can someone let us know if Harvey Levin is coming?

thursday, 18 august: vqff centrepiece gala

Grown-up Movie StarIt's hard to believe that we will already be a week into this year's Vancouver Queer Film Festival when the centerpiece gala rolls around.  This year the team at VQFF presents the Canadian feature Grown Up Movie Star.  Haven't heard of it?  Apparently you're not alone. Despite being the only Canadian film selected for Sundance’s World Cinema competition in 2010 the film saw limited release.  Shawn Doyle stars as a disgraced NHL star grappling with both his sexuality and his  relationshiop with his 13-year old daughter.  The movie is followed by a party at The Helm.  Visit http://queerfilmfestival.ca for more information.

friday, 19 august: cativo

Those hardworking kids over at Hardline Productions are back again looking to "punch us in the face".  This time it is an original script from the company's resident artists.  Vancouver's gay community is represented here as well, as actor Gui Fontanezzi plays cab driver Rodrigo and Christopher David Gauthier is the show's designer.  Visit http://hardlineproductions.ca for more information.

saturday, 20 august: pride slide

Pride SlideOkay, we know we may take a little heat for this one as the Bridal Falls Waterpark falls just a little beyond our usual coverage area.  But with so few LGBTQ family events passing across our desks we couldn't resist.  Hosted by the Vancouver LGBTQ Adoptive Parents group, Pride Slide is four hours of fun in the sun just east of Chilliwack.  Bring your own picnic lunch and enjoy an afternoon with other LGBTQ families.  And the best thing?  The park features heated water on all the slides!  Visit http://www.prideslide.eventbrite.com for tickets and more information.

sunday, 21 august: hair today, gone tomorrow

Have you noticed those sculptures at the bottom of Davie Street near English Bay?  You know, those big laughing heads?  The installation, part of Vancouver Biennale, is a series of sculptures called A-maze-ing Laughter by Chinese artist Yue Minjun.  Today starting at 10am, another artist, Vancouver's Trevor Sand will help transform those pieces of art with the installation of unique hairpieces on each of the sculptures.  But you'll have to hurry, Sand's hairpiece installation is only around until 6pm, after which the sculptures will go back to their original condition.  Visit http://ww.vancouverbiennale.com for more information.
