Some dancers, a few cute kids, a legendary monster, male exotic dancers, queens on roller coasters and even a few hippies are some of the people (and things) you're going to meet this week as we present our gay choices for 11 - 17 July 2011.

Of course, you'll want to check our Events Calendar for details of all the latest happenings around the city. You can also get our daily events feed directly on your iGoogle homepage!

Got an event? Send us the details and we'll get it added to our calendar (and maybe see it listed here in the coming weeks).

monday, 11 july: dancing on the edge festival

Now in its 23rd year, the Dancing on the Edge Festival continues its legacy of presenting innovative dance where festival artists take their art to the edge.  Through July 16 the program mostly plays out at the Firehall Arts Centre but we're more intrigued by those pieces being performed in more non-traditional venues like Victory Square or the duck pond at Queen Elizabeth Theatre.  A number of dance companies led by gay artists, including Michael Trent's Dancemakers from Toronto and Vancouver's own Josh Beamish and his move: the company will perform.  Visit http://www.dancingontheedge.org for tickets and information.

Tuesday, 12 July: adoption information session

Adoption Information SessionWe know this one won't be for everyone but with so many kids needing adopting in British Columbia we just had to help get the word out.  Besides, after seeing Amy Bohigian's recent documentary Conceiving Family we've become suckers for cute kids.  Run by the Family Services Licensed Adoption Agency, the session is an opportunity to find out about local and intercountry adoption, hear from their staff and hear first-hand some adoptive parents experiences.  Visit http://www.fsgv.ca for more information.

Wednesday, 13 july: theatre under the stars

Well that took a while but it looks like summer is finally here!  We sure hope so because its time to open up Malkin Bowl in Stanley Park to Theatre Under the Stars who present Bye Bye Birdie and Anything Goes this year. We're especially excited about seeing Anything Goes given the recent revival on Broadway garnered a Tony this year. Slap on the mosquito repellant and don't forget a blanket and we'll see you in the park. Through August 20th, the two shows alternate nights.  Visit http://www.tuts.ca for tickets and information.

thursday, 14 july: junk

Junk at Oasis on DavieThe Oasis on Davie brings back a weekly night of male exotic dancers, the likes of which we haven't seen since The Dufferin closed.  Actually we take that back, it's nothing like The Dufferin and for those of you that remember that's probably a good thing.  Brings back so many memories.  I wonder what some of the male exotic dancers from its heyday are up to now?  Visit http://www.oasisondavie.com for more information.

friday, 15 july: the beast of bottomless lake

Follow Dr. Paul Moran, Cryptozoologist, as he leads a team of dedicated and not-so-dedicated adventurers on an expedition to Okanagan Lake to prove the existence of the legendary lake serpent, Ogopogo. We're pretty sure this is a documentary.  Local gay filmmaker David C Jones also has a short called Coffee Club that will play before the main attraction. Visit the group's Facebook event page for more information.

saturday, 16 july: gay day at playland

Playland at the PNEIt's back! The most fun you will ever have on a roller coaster with a drag queen.  A sea of red t-shirts descends on our local amusement park that not only includes the vomit inducing rides, mini-donuts and stuffed teddy bears bigger than anything you've ever seen at The Pumpjack on a Saturday night, but this day also includes a private beer garden and entertainment.  Visit http://www.vancouverpride.ca for tickets and information.

sunday, 17 july: vancouver folk music festival

Another Vancouver summer tradition closes out its 34th annual Festival at Jericho Beach Park today.  Featuring a stellar line-up of artists from around the world over three days, the Festival isn't just for the crunchy granola Kits hippies anymore.  We're pretty sure Kits still has hippies ... The Naam is still open so we're going to say its a pretty sure bet.  Visit http://www.thefestival.bc.ca for more information.
