Is Vancouver considered safe?

Vancouver is a very tolerant city and embraces it's diversity including its vibrant LGBT community.  Being openly gay in the West End or Davie Village areas (holding hands, showing affection, etc) usually does not attract much attention but as with most large cities there are the exceptions to this rule and we recommend being aware of your surroundings and the people around you at all times.

Hate crimes are few and far between here but not uncommon especially during bar closing times and during the summer months when more people are out-and-about.

Personally we would not find ourselves in the Downtown Eastside area at night.
