Squares Across the Border, the local gay and lesbian square dancing club, as well as the only square dance group in the city of Vancouver, has been offering modern western square dance lessons for for the last 25 years. Starting this September, the club will begin its 26th year.
Squares Across the Border is one the few clubs in the gay, lesbian, transgender and straight community that truly draws members from across the community in a safe, drug and alcohol free environment. According to John Leisch, President of Squares Across the Border there are few places in Vancouver that provide this service and the opportunity for members to meet together in the spirit of fun and recreation. "Square Dancing is a fun and invigorating recreational activity and is truly 'friendship set to music'", said John. The club has had the opportunity to host two international Association of Gay Square Dance Clubs conventions in 1990 and 2001 where over 1,000 square dancers met at a Vancouver hotel for five days of music, dance and fun. At this years convention in Cleveland, Ohio, Squares Across the Border was awarded the 2012 event, making them the only club to host three conventions. The Club also hosts an annual fly-in weekend of dance and workshops where dancers from the around the Pacific Northwest join them for fun, fellowship, music and dance. This years fly-in is scheduled from November 27th to 29th. The Club's fall season begins Tuesday, September 8th, 2009, with a free introductory dance at Renegade Dance Studio, 19 Victoria Drive at Powell and will continue with free introductory dances on Tuesdays at St. Michael’s Church located at 409 East Broadway. No experience, partner or special clothing needed. Squares Across the Border
