There Will Be Blood 5 of 5 Stars
Released: January 2008
Runtime: 158 minutes
Rated: R (violence)

Truly profound performances are a rare commodity in movies these days but Daniel Day-Lewis brings a mesmerizing portrayal of Daniel Plainview in P.T. Anderson's epic There Will Be Blood.  Already a winner of the Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild awards (among numerous others) for his outstanding performance, one would be hard-pressed to find someone more deserving come Oscar time than Day-Lewis.

But along with Day-Lewis' portrayal of Plainview the movie also offers up some inspired acting from Paul Dano playing twins Paul and Eli Sunday and from ten-year old Dillon Freasier as Plainview's son H.W.

Dillon Freasier, left, and Daniel Day-Lewis in There Will Be Blood

Inspired by Upton Sinclair's novel Oil!, There Will Be Blood tells the story of Daniel Plainview and his rise as one of the California's richest oil men.  Much of the 158 minute movie sees Plainview slowly sink into insanity as his greed and need for power consume him.

Through the story Plainview adopts a young boy orphaned as a result of an oil rig accident and begins to use him, as we later find out, as another tool in his never-ending search for riches.  Throw in the two twins, Paul who sells out his family in the first reel and is never heard from again and Eli, the evangelical preacher with a Jesus complex, and you have a cast of wild characters to rival anything P.T. Anderson can conjure.

Along with the very memorable performances, another huge stand-out is the haunting, dark and emotionally charged music by Johnny Greenwood of Radiohead fame who now joins the likes of John Williams (Star Wars, Jaws, E.T.) and Howard Shore (The Lord of the Rings trilogy) as recipient of the Broadcast Film Critics Association Award for best composer.  Good thing that Greenwood is receiving kudos for his music here from other sources as his score contains some 46 minutes of pre-existing works and as a result has been declared ineligible for an Oscar as the official rules exclude "scores diluted by the use of tracked themes or other pre-existing music".

Cinematographer Robert Elswit (Syriana, Michael Clayton) and Production Designer Jack Fisk (Mulholland Drive, The New World) also put in award-winning performances by conjuring the murky mine shafts, the harsh landscapes and the intense light of the burning oil derrick for Plainsview and the rest of the characters to inhabit.

In a movie where the hype indicated a one-man tour de force, there are so many other elements in making There Will Be Blood one of the best movies to hit movie screens in a very long time.  You come for Day-Lewis and his acting but leave with the appreciation that it such more than just one man's acting that makes a good movie.
